A look back at Kid Poker’s career
Daniel Negreanu is undoubtedly one of the top professional poker players in the world. As a Team PokerStars Pro and great ambassador to the game, Negreanu has accomplished more than most people can dream during his long poker career.
Negreanu burst onto the tournament scene in 1997 with three wins, including two events at the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods, earning $55,054. There he was named the tournament’s best all-around player. Since then, he has added 30 wins to his list of accomplishments, or 35 if you include celebrity events, invitational tournaments and “Poker After Dark.”
After taking down the inaugural World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific Main Event just this week, he has now earned five WSOP gold bracelets to go along with his two World Poker Tour championships.

His most successful year was 2004 after being named CardPlayer Player of the Year, WSOP Player of the Year and WPT Player of the Year. That same year, he banked the largest earnings of his tournament profession after cashing in 15 events including winning five major tournaments for $4,465,907 – his best year to date.
As of April 2013, his total live tournament winnings exceed $17.4 million, placing him sixth on the All-Time Money List behind Erik Seidel, Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, Sam Trickett and Antonio Esfandiari.
Negreanu’s first WSOP in-the-money finish also happened to be his first WSOP gold bracelet. He won $169,460 in the 1998 $2,000 Pot-Limit Hold’em event, becoming the youngest bracelet winner in WSOP history, a record he held until 2004. For those reasons, it is perhaps one of his more favored WSOP bracelets that he has earned.
In 2004, Negreanu earned two WPT titles after winning the $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em event at the Borgata Poker Open and the $15,000 Championship at the Five Diamond World Poker Classic. Both accomplishments were quite the feat after facing two tough final tables back-to-back. While in Atlantic City, Negreanu had to push through 302 opponents including a final table consisting of Ivey, Josh Arieh and fellow Team Pro David Williams, who he defeated in heads-up play.
Then, just a few months later, Negreanu once again emerged victorious, besting a field of 376 players including Jennifer Harman, Hasan Habib, Johnny Chan, Chris Grigorian and second-place finisher Humberto Brenes, who is also a part of Team PokerStars Pro. Between the two events he earned nearly $3 million closing out an amazing year.
Later in November 2008, he won the fourth-annual British Columbia Poker Championships Main Event, topping a field of 689 players (a personal high), earning $300,708.
With a few dozen wins under his belt it is no surprise that he has earned such a large sum. Of his 30 first-place titles, 22 of them have been cash prizes of less than $100,000. But with an impressive $17 million in career earnings, he has proven that it is not just what you win but how many.
Here’s a look at his top money finishes in order of money won:
• 2004 WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic $15,000 Championship: 1st – $1,770,218
• 2004 WPT Borgata Poker Open $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em: 1st – $1,117,400

Grinders, the Underground Poker World
The poker documentary “Grinders” is not really a documentary about the game of poker. If you’re expecting to see exciting action at the tables or flashy card-playing at tournaments, this isn’t the documentary for you. Instead, “Grinders” is the director’s journey into the “unconventional, often bizarre, underground world of illegal poker clubs.” Instead of portraying [...] Continue reading
