Benyamine Banks Premier League IV Win

“It feels really good winning a title, I’m not used to it,” said Benyamine.

“I haven’t really been around for a while and I hope this gives me momentum going forward! I really enjoyed the format and competition – I’m sure it will make great TV.”

Taking place at the M Resort in Las Vegas, it was the first time the Premier League had been hosted in the U.S.

Poker pros Daniel Negreanu, Phil Laak, Roland De Wolfe and Italian online qualifier Giovanni Safina all entered the final table with a shot at the $400,000 first place prize.

Surprisingly Laak was the first player to fall, despite the fact he dominated the group stages, winning three of the six heats.

Laak would soon be joined by De Wolfe and Negreanu who finished fifth and fourth respectively.

Online qualifier Safina was finally given his ticket to the rail when Schwartz sucked out after getting it in behind.

This set up an epic heads-up match between Benyamine and the volatile Schwartz. Although Schwartz had a 2-1 chip lead heading into the match, it was eventually Benyamine who got the best of the trash-talking Schwartz.

“I’m really, really disappointed,” said Luke who received $200,000 for second. “I think I played the best this week and I deserved to come first but that’s how it goes.”

Benyamine, who is primarily a cash game player, admitted that Schwartz was a challenge for him.

“Luke (Schwartz) is a very impulsive player but I just stuck to my own game heads-up and it was enough,” he said.

Benyamine joins J.C. Tran, Andy Black and Juha Helppi as the only players to win a Premier League title.

PartyPoker Premier League Lineup Set

Along with 2009 champion J.C. Tran, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, Vanessa Rousso, Roland de Wolfe, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Phil Laak, David Benyamine, Luke “FullFlush” Schwartz and Tony G, the roster now includes Team Party pro Ian Frazer.

Frazer secured his place in the Main Event through a six-handed playoff Thursday that included fellow Team Party members Bodo Sbrzesny, Remy Biechel, Felipe “Mojave” Ramos, Poker Hall of Fame inductee Mike Sexton and special guest player Dragon Galic.

“I came, I fought, I conquered,” said Frazer. “I’ve really got a feeling I can win this and I am so delighted that I have made it into the Main Event.”

Also securing his place in the $100,000 Main Event this week through a playoff with a group of fellow online qualifiers was 44-year-old Giovanni Safina, a civil lawyer from Palermo, Sicily.

Safini qualified for a spot in the playoff in a €100 satellite on PartyPoker.

“This is the very first time I have been to Las Vegas,” said Giovanni. “Poker is purely a hobby for me though I have won €25,000 online before. To reach the Premier League was always my goal and I am incredibly happy.

“I am a huge poker fan and have seen all the players I will be competing against on television. It is going to be so emotional sitting down with them for the first time but I will keep myself in check.”

The first heat of the Premier League takes place at the M Resort in Las Vegas today (Friday) with Frazer playing against Tran, Negreanu, Schwartz, Timoshenko, De Wolfe, Laak and Rousso.

The league features 12 preliminary single-table matches with each player competing in six.

Players accumulate points based on where they finish in each heat and the top four players advance to the final.

The next four players play heads-up matches for the last two spots in the final where starting stacks are determined by the number of points earned in the preliminary round.

Unabomber Replaces Brunson in PartyPoker Premier League

The PartyPoker.com World Open V champion was asked to come on board when the legendary Brunson bowed out due to dental surgery.

“This is the most money I have ever wagered against the toughest field I have ever faced,” said Laak. “Collectively my opponents have over $45 million in tournament winnings. This will be the best ride ever. Full stop.”

The Premier League will take place at the M Resort Spa Casino in Las Vegas Feb. 12-18 with defending champion J.C. Tran, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Roland de Wolfe, Luke Schwartz, Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Vanessa Rousso, David Benyamine and Tony G all taking part in the $100k buy-in event.

PartyPoker also ran qualifiers to find a total of 16 players who are all in Las Vegas to play in a Premier League Poker play-off for a spot in the Premier League main event. Plus, one of the 16 qualifiers will be chosen by PartyPoker to receive a $100,000 Team Party contract.

Both the play-off and the main event will be filmed for TV.

Tran won the PartyPoker.com Premier League III and its $300,000 first prize defeating a final table that included Tom “durrrr” Dwan, Juha Helppi, Tony G, Roland de Wolfe and Peter Eastgate.

This is the first year the Premier League will play out in Las Vegas and the Forbes Four Star M Resort is excited to play host.

“Premier League Poker has been incredibly successful,” said Joseph A. Magliarditi, Executive Vice President and COO, M Resort. “The event is uniquely set-up and attracts some of the top players in world. We’re looking forward to hosting it this year.”

With 92,000 square feet of gaming, 390 guest rooms and suites, nine restaurants and five destination bars, more than 60,000 square feet of meeting and conference space, a state-of-the-art spa and fitness centre and a 100,000 square foot events piazza, Eddie Hearn, Director of event organizer Matchroom Sport, believes M is the perfect destination for the Premier League.

“When we decided to take the Premier League to Las Vegas we needed a venue to match this prestigious event,” he said. “The M Resort is a stunning location and the perfect place for the players to relax whilst they are amongst the heat of battle in what has become the world’s biggest televised poker spectacle.”
